As a relatively new mountain biker, I was hesitant to take on a trail after sunset. But my friends (who are much more experienced than I) assured me that there would be no danger, or anything to be afraid of. Comforted by their trusting words, I finally complied. We left at dusk, and it was still faintly light out by the time we actually hit the trail. We had LED lights attached to our frames, which surprisingly gave off more than enough light when the sun finally faded. We rode all through Serrano Creek trail, which looks even cooler at night with all the tunnels. I highly recommend this trail to beginners as there are fewer ruts, no sudden steep drops in the path, and it winds all through residential areas in case anything were to happen. Riding at night was definitely a different experience, and I’m eager to do it all summer! Keep your eyes on the trial ahead of you and be watchful of shadows, as your eyes can play tricks on you. Small rodents can also jump out of bushes, and…

Running is a high impact repetitive movement. As your foot stikes the ground and your transfer weight any imbalances in your foot/ankle knee and hip/pelvis will be exaggerated. Because in the nanoseconds it takes to transfer your weight and land, there is no possible way that you can make any corrections in your body patterns to change the way your foot lands. Therefore long term consistent running (a few days a week for years and years) Create larger and larger body imbalances.
So why are these imbalances bad? the longer you place more stress on one side of a joint then the other, you weaken one side, and continue to stress one side, if you do not correct this you will inevitably injure yourself. Now you are probably thinking does everyone have imbalances? Yes, and runners tend to have more then others, Correcting these imbalances you will run faster, smoother and increase your recovery time.
The way to manage these imbalances, is bi lateral body weight training,…

My name is Lauren, and I’m 25 living in south OC. I have only been mountain biking for a few months now, and have picked up the sport quickly. I must admit the intimidation factor was present in the first few shaky rides, but was increasingly replaced with eager confidence. I started riding the Serrano Creek trails, and eventually graduated to the more aggressive hills of Whiting Ranch. As practice progressed into skill, and experience turned into knowledge, I started to realize I was becoming addicted. That’s not to say I haven’t taken some brutal tumbles. In fact, each time I fall, I learn to respect the mountain a little more, and gain a passionate understanding for the sport itself. The entire transition was a breathtaking experience, and as an adrenaline junkie, I feel I have only scratched the surface!
For those of you looking to get involved in mountain biking, please heed the following helpful tips below that could make the world of a difference in your…
